Abstract
1,015,711. Forging. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. April 4, 1963 [April 4, 1962], No. 12840/62. Heading B3H. A forging manipulator, Fig. 9, has a peel 12 mounted for longitudinal movement relative to the carriage by drive means independent of the carriage drive. This enables the elongated workpiece 13, Fig. 5, to remain stationary during its actual forging whilst the carriage moves forward with constant speed. Upon release of the workpiece by the forging tools the peel moves rapidly to its original position on the carriage. An hydraulic drive 30, Fig. 14 (not shown) and control system for the peel is described using mechanical or preferably solenoidoperated valves. The peel, Fig. 9, is reciprocable upon splines 17 within a tube 11 rotatable in bearings 16 through gearing 15 by hydraulic motor 21, and is movable transversely by hydraulic rams 20. Longitudinal movement of the carriage which runs along rails is effected by pinions 22 co-operating with fixed racks 23, Fig. 11 (not shown). All the hydraulic motors are supplied by a common electrically driven pump from a single reservoir and accumulator assembly. The workpiece 13, Fig. 5 (not shown), is gripped between master and slave manipulators 9, 10 whilst being forged between the tools of a double-acting horizontal hydraulic press, Fig. 8 (not shown). A flat horizontal roller table 25, Fig. 7 (not shown), with driven rollers capable of supporting the workpiece is rotatable about a vertical axis and is adjustable vertically. Rams 27 are provided to move the press tools from a magazine 28 past hinged flaps and into the press axis where they are secured to the crossheads 3 by spring-loaded locking devices. The crossheads 3 each slide along tierods 2 and are driven by an assembly of hydraulic motors 4, Fig. 3 (not shown), having some cylinders in the fixed head 1 and others in the movable crosshead 3. Retraction motors 7 are also provided. In an alternative embodiment three rams of equal or different areas are provided to move each crosshead. Equal volumes of pressure liquid are supplied to each motor assembly 4 to enable synchronous movement of the crossheads 3. Water cooling passages 2a, Fig. 4 (not shown), are provided on the tie-rods 2. The manipulators are controlled from the movements of the press by control signals responsive to the tool position whereby they move the workpiece stepwise between the tools.
