Abstract

791,795. Forging. LIEBERGELD, M. June 24, 1954, No. 21308/56. Divided out of 18531/54. Class 83 (4). A method, Fig. 3, of making hollow metal articles by coldforging, comprises forcing a punch 14 into a blank 12 located in a die cavity closed at its bottom end, whereby the blank metal is displaced laterally into contact with the cavity wall without downward crushing of the blank metal, and thereafter whilst the punch is still inside the blank the latter is compressed by a shoulder 14a to consolidate the metal. The blank is located centrally in the die by a centring flange 12a and by a base portion 12b both of which initially engage the cavity wall. A countersunk centring hole 3a may also be provided for the punch. An ejector 7 removes the forged article from the die. Other embodiments using various shapes of blank for producing various hollow articles are described. The die cavity may be of circular cross-section, Fig. 5 (not shown), and a blank of square cross-section may be used with its edges engaging the cavity wall to ensure centring; alternatively a circular section blank may be used in a square section die cavity, Fig. 6 (not shown).
