[Class 83 (iv)] Dies.-A method of making nuts and the like involves squaring up the end faces of a blank 18, Fig. 1, in a cylindrical die 12 simultaneously with forming a recess 20 in the lower face, reversing the blank and placing it in an hexagonal die 25, Fig. 2, using the recess for centring a punch 32, which forces the metal laterally into the confines of the cavity. A second centring recess 30 is formed by the end of a knock-out pin 29 and when the blank is reversed a punch 44 engages the recess and forces out a wad 50, Fig. 3, a hollow knock-out pin 38 supporting the centre of the blank. In the next operation an hexagonal punch 54, Fig. 4, closely fits an hexagonal die 53 provided with a shoulder 57 for forming a washer recess in the nut. The punch 54 is provided with a bevelled part 60 and cylindrical stepped part 59. The blank now assumes the form shown in Fig. 13 and is placed in the die 62 shown in Fig. 5 for completion of the operation by means of a punch 64 the blank being unconfined at the top as indicated in the drawing.
