Abstract
393,414. Forging socketed screws &c. HOLO-KROME SCREW CORPORATION, 80, Pliny Street, Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Purtell, W. A. ; 687, Broadview Terrace, Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.) June 2, 1932, No. 15659. Convention date, June 4, 1931. [Class 83 (iv).] Forging dies and punches. - A socketed article such as the screw, Fig. 9, with hexagonal socket 22 and compacted fibre structure 23 in the head, is formed by upsetting a head on the end of an unheated blank 1 in a die 4 in two stages, first by the die 7 to form a bulge 2 and then by the die 12 to form the head 9 having the top crowned at 11 and recessed at 15, the socket being then formed by the punch 20, in which latter operation the head may be located entirely in the recess 19 in the lower die 16 or partly or wholly projecting from the die. In forming a socketed grub screw, Fig. 19, the blank may be first upset at 33, Fig. 14, by the dies 26, 29 previous to forming the socket by the punch 37 and dies 34, 38, after which the excess metal round the socket is turned down to produce a screw body of uniform diameter, or the upsetting operation may be omitted.
