Abstract

685,834. Making bolts &c. PATENT-UND VERSUCHS-ANSTALT. March 17, 1949 [Jan. 21, 1949], No. 7380/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Altering physical structure.-In order to obtain a bolt, rivet or the like of varying crosssection but with approximately uniform strength characteristics or with parts having predetermined differing strength characteristics, a blank 18, Fig. 2, is upset over at least a part of its length, as at 19, Fig. 3, in an extrusion die which completely surrounds the blank and a portion of the upset part is then extruded, as at 20, Fig. 4, and the remaining mextruded portion 21 is upset by cold impact to form a head 22, Fig. 5, whereby the total deformation of each part is chosen so as to give the required strength characteristics. The thread-receiving portion 23 may be reduced by known means, if desired. A rivet, Fig. 10, is made similarly except that the end 45 is left undeformed until it is finally hammered to form the closing head.
