Abstract

681,461. Forging bolts &c. BRAEMS, J. Dec. 6, 1950 [Dec. 7, 1949], No. 29859/50. Class 83 (iv). A method of cold heading bolts, screws, rivets and the like comprises upsetting cylindrical stock to form a roughlyshaped blank having in order from head to shank end, a first cylindrical portion 1, Fig. 3, a bulged portion 2, of increasing diameter, a frusto-conical portion 3 of reducing diameter and a conical portion 4 merging into a second cylindrical portion 5, and then upsetting in an associated finishing die and punch the whole of the roughly-shaped blank with the exception of the portion 5 to form a head thereon. A modified blank, Fig. 4, has a cylindrical portion 4 between the frusto-conical portion and the conical portion. The method is stated to improve the macro and micro structure in the finished head and obtain smooth lines of equal hardness along the work-piece. A roughing die 5 is positioned above the finishing die 11 and the fingers of the transfer mechanism 13 trace an arcuate trajectory through gearing and connecting-rods 17, 171, oscillating about axes 18, 18<SP>1</SP>. A drive lever 14 and the connecting-rod oscillating it are both adjustable for length so that the stroke of the mechanism 13 may be varied.
