Abstract

468,324. Forging barbed nails. WIT, W. J. DE. Oct. 19, 1936, No. 28413. Convention date, Oct. 19, 1935. [Class 83 (iv)] The barbed wire nail shown in Fig. 6, is made by forging first upsetting the head 4 by a tool 5, Fig. 1, and then barbing and pointing by dies 11, 12. The dies 11 are shaped as shown in Fig. 2, for cutting off the point, and the dies 12 are stepped to form the barbs. These latter dies may be shaped to provide inclined barbs. The dies 12 are adjusted by screws so that they grip the wire during the latter part of the stroke of the dies 11. In consequence of the pressure exerted on the point during the severing operation the nail is moved longitudinally to press the nail shank against the dies forming the barbs. As shown in Fig. 6, the barbs 2 are forged to a position beyond the circumference of the blank.
