Abstract
504,928. Riveting. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and ANDREWS, J. H. Oct. 28,1937, Nos. 29442/37 and 13108/38. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group VII] A mandril, such as that shown, for use in setting hollow rivets, comprises a non-circular head 1, a similar'stem-portion 3, and a circular stem 5 recessed to an oval section at 7 to form a construction which breaks after setting the rivet by pulling on the mandril. The mandril may be made by a cold-forging process from spoke wire in a machine of nail-making type using a pair of dies which form the recesses 7, a cutting tool to sever the wire at this stage from the mandril last formed, and a heading tool operated axially to upset the metal at the free end of the wire forcing it into the dies to form the portions 1, 3 of the mandril. Specification 501,415 is referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
