[Also in Division F2] In the manufacture of a lock-nut having a body portion 20 and a smaller thin-walled internally threaded collar portion 19, Fig. 6 (not shown), a workpiece is hot-forged in a die, Fig. 4 (not shown), to form the two portions and simultaneously to partially pierce the workpiece leaving a wad 23 which is subsequently punched out, Fig. 6. The operations are performed in a continuous sequence in a multi-station machine wherein the starting workpiece cut from hot bar stock is first descaled by pressing between tools 11, Fig. 2 (not shown). After inserting into die 13 the workpiece is pressed by punch 12 which forms the body 20 to hexagonal external shape, forwardly extrudes the collar 19 and simultaneously its nose 18 partially pierces the workpiece. An ejector rod 16 indents the other end of the workpiece and subsequently ejects the latter. In die 25, Fig. 6, the wad 23 is punched out by punch 29 passing through a stripper aperture 31. Alternatively the end of the collar may abut the die face during the punching operation. The workpiece is subsequently tapped. In use, the thin-walled collar of the lock-nut is deformed by a punch into a V-shaped slot 33, Fig. 7 (not shown), of the threaded shaft 32.
