Abstract
824,054. Forging nut blanks. WATERBURY FARREL FOUNDRY & MACHINE CO. July 8, 1957 [July 24, 1956], No. 21523/57. Class 83 (4). A nut blank, Fig. 13, having a tapered bore with an inwardly-projecting key 84, is made by pressing a workpiece 65, Fig. 12 (not shown), of circular external shape between tools 69, 70, 80, Fig. 7, which form simultaneously the bore and key and also form the external surface to non- circular shape. The external surface is preferably duohexagonal. Rod or wire stock 14, Fig. 1, is severed into cylindrical blanks by a reciprocating knife 15 which transfers it to a first die 17 into which it is pushed by a punch 20 on a reciprocating gate 11. The blank 22 is upset and slightly indented by an ejector pin 19 which subsequently removes it to a transfer mechanism which moves it to a second die 25 where a punch 29 indents its opposite face. After ejection by a rod 27, the blank is transferred, during which it is turned end for end, into a third die 35 where a skirt portion 41 is formed by a die insert 38 and the opposite face is further indented by a punch 43. An ejector rod 44 removes the blank and it is transferred into a slidable fourth die 54 which is biased forwardly by a spring 55. A hollow punch 61 presses the blank 65 over a stationary punch 59 which removes a wad 62 and the tubular blank is then removed by an ejector bush 58 actuated by ejector rods 60. The blank is then transferred into the final die 69 which is slidable against a biasing spring 74, and therein the blank is upset into duohexagonal shape by a hollow punch 70 and is simultaneously pressed over a stationary pin 80 having a tapered end 81 and keyway 82 for forming the tapered bore and key. Finally, as described in Specification 796,772, the die 69 is moved forwardly by push-rods 89 to remove the blank from pin 80 and the blank is then removed from the die by a bush 83 driven by push-rods 93. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 796,772.
