Abstract
874,167. Extruding cupped articles; forging. TEXTRON Inc. Jan. 19, 1959 [Jan. 24, 1958], No. 1843/59. Class 83 (4). A cup-shaped metal article is made on a machine having a plurality of co-operating punches and dies by first applying pressure to both sides of a workpiece to increase its diameter and form it into a disc 44 having indented end faces, and then backwardly extruding the disc around a punch 56 to form a cup-shape 58, and simultaneously forming a projection 59 on the opposite side of the disc. Rod stock 14, preferably of copper, is fed through a shear die 13, servered by a knife 15 and transferred thereby to a first die station 1 where it is squared, sized and indented on both sides in a die 18 by a punch 20 carried by a reciprocating gate 11. The blank is ejected by a pin 22 and transferred to die station 2 where it is upset to disc shape 44 between a spring-loaded pin 34 surrounded by sleeve 31 and a punch 38 having a central spring-loaded locating pin 39. Punch 38 acts as a bumper for the reciprocating gate. The blank is next transferred, during which it is turned through 180 degrees, to die station 3 where it is backwardly extruded to cup-shape 58 in a die 50 by a punch 56 and simultaneously a rear projection 59 is extruded thereon. At the next station 4 the thickened end 59 is extruded forwardly by a punch 68 to form a stepped cup-shaped article 70 which is then sized to final shape 85, 86, Fig. 12, at station 5 within a die 74 by a punch comprising an outer sleeve 80 and a central pin 79. Cooling oil is supplied to die 74 through ducts 77, 78.
