Abstract

1,061,193. Making ball studs; extruding; forging. T.R.W. Inc. Oct. 4, 1963 [Dec. 6, 1962], No. 39238/63. Headings B3A, B3H and B3P. In the manufacture of ball studs, a workpiece 20 is upset in a die cavity 21, Fig. 3, by a punch 33 slidable in a holder 32 having a die throat. 32b through which part of the workpiece is extruded whereby the deformed part of the workpiece between the punch and throat exerts a force F on the holder to urge it against the die face. The starting workpiece is an unheated rod cut from stock and during its upsetting, a shank portion is extruded into die 25. After removal by a knock-out pin 26, the workpiece is inserted in a second die 40, Fig. 5, where its upset portion is backwardly extruded by a punch 49 whose conical end is shaped to trap oil in the cavity being formed and thus prevent metal to metal contact between the conical end and the workpiece. An annular bulge 42a is upset on the shank to hold the workpiece in the die during withdrawal of the punch; this bulge is smoothed out when the workpiece is ejected by a knock-out pin 46. In a final die 50, Fig. 8 (not shown), the end is partially closed to spherical shape by a punch 60 floating in its holder 59. A knock-out pin 57 is provided. The shank end 11 is finally threaded. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 921,431.
