Abstract
1426274 Making ball studs; forging; extruding TOUCY MECANIQUE GENERALE SOC TMG 16 April 1973 [17 April 1972 12 Jan 1973] 18173/73 Headings B3H B3A and B3P A ball-and-socket joint stud is made from a cylindrical billet 19 by partially extruding the billet at a first station to produce at least one cylindrical shank portion followed by forming a hollow spherical head on the unextruded end of the billet at second, third and fourth stations, the shank being formed with a tapered portion at the fourth station. The head is produced by upsetting the end of the billet using a punch 21, Fig. 2, while the billet is held in a die 27. The upset end is then backwardly extruded, Fig. 3, using a punch 45 and the cupped end is closed, Fig. 4, by a punch 73. The billet is light steel and is pushed by a ram (5), Fig. 1 (not shown), into a die 7 or a pair of aligned dies 7, 11 to produce the cylindrical shank portion or portions. Each die has a carbide core 9, 13. At the third station, Fig. 3, the shank is formed with a chamfer 63 to facilitate thread rolling on the or the end cylindrical shank portion. The operations may be carried out on a transfer press with intermediate annealing and phosphatization.
