Abstract

732,603. Extruding. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 11, 1953, No. 13045/53. Class 83 (4). A method of producing by extrusion individual metal articles, particularly discrete lengths of aluminium tube, comprises inserting a billet 27 into a container after having lubricated either the billet or the container, partially extruding the billet through a die orifice by means of a punch 25, inserting a second lubricated billet 29 into the container upon the first billet and completing the extrusion of the first billet and partially extruding the second billet by means of the punch, the billet engaging surface 23 of the latter having such a concave curvature that all points in that surface of the billet which lie adjacent to the concave surface of the punch substantially lie in a plane substantially perpendicular to the axis of extrusion after being extruded through the orifice. The method which is preferably performed cold enables the billets to' be completely extruded in succession without forming discards so that separate products are produced. The punch has a mandrel 28. The billets are preformed with one face complementary to the concave surface of the punch and the opposite face identical with the concave surface. A method is described for obtaining the curvature of the concave surface.
