Forging nails.-Horseshoe nails are made by first pressing up the shank on the end of a rod &c. fed automatically to the machine, severing the blank from the rod, carrying the blank to another press in which the shank is subjected to a second pressing operation so as to shorten the tapered part between the shank and the head and finally carrying the blank to a third station where the head is upset. The rod W is fed by the feeding arm 11 to the four-die press 10, which presses up the shank. The blank is then severed and grasped at the position a, Fig. l , by an arm of a four-or-eight armed stepwise rotating carrier 1 and carried to the position h, where it is pressed a second time by four dies arranged in pairs on arms 2 forming parts of levers 3 mounted loosely on pivots 4. The levers 3 are knuckle-jointed to members 6 and are operated by cams 5. The lateral movement of the die carrying arms 2 allows the blank held by the carrier to enter the space between the dies in a lateral direction. During the pressing operation the blank is forced outwards by the dies but is forced back again when the dies move apart by a spring 7 so that it reaches the upsetting position c in correct position relative to the upsetting tool 12.
