430,124. Making bolts &c. NATIONAL MACHINERY CO., Tiffin, Ohio, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Friedman, J. H.) July 7, 1934, No. 19989. Convention date, July 11, 1933. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Drawing and forging dies.-In extruding a length of stock to form a bolt &c. blank, the blank usually comprising a head 15, Fig. 3a, and a shank portion 9<a> connected by a cylindrical portion 16 intermediate them in diameter, the diameter of the connecting portion 16 is reduced to that of the shank portion 9<a> by a further extrusion operation. A die 17, Fig. 4, for this purpose has a tapered guiding throat 18 leading to a bore of the same diameter as the shank portion 9<a>. The die 20, Fig. 6, forming the initial blank may have a bore stepped down twice to form in one operation a shank portion, intermediate portion, and an unreduced portion adapted to be upset to form the head. The resulting blank has a grain structure free from re-entrant curves and a shank of uniform diameter up to the base of the head which has a diameter greater with respect to that of the shank than could be produced by a single upsetting blow on material of the diameter of the shank.
