Abstract

964,521. Extruding; forging. TEXTRON Inc. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 9, 1960], No. 4120/61. Headings B3H and B3P. A heading machine or the like has a die bed 10 having mounted thereon a pair of dies 27, 28, each containing an ejector 31, the two ejectors being actuated concurrently by common means 48, 50 operating independently of and in timed relationship with the reciprocating gate 15. The machine has a cylindrical gate 15, Fig. 2, reciprocated by a crank-shaft 11 and carrying a pair of punches 20 co-operating respectively with an extruding die 27 and a heading die 28, Fig. 3. Wire stock is fed through a shearing die orifice 30, Fig. 8, against a stop 135 which is adjustable through gearing 142 by a spindle 145. The stop is held in a forward operative position by a pin 140 cooperating with a vertical rotary shaft 148 driven through linkage 151 by a cam 155, Fig. 7 (not shown). The shaft has a recess 149 which permits retraction of the stop to allow movement of the cut-off mechanism during the cycle of operation of the machine. The cutoff mechanism, Fig. 3, comprises an upper guide member 75 and a lower cut-off member 100. The upper member is guided in a vertical sleeve 73 and actuated through a pair of links 79, 81 having relative movement against a spring 86, by a cam 89. Lower member 100 is pivoted at 102 to a lever 103 and has a compound movement a, b, c, produced by linkage from cams 109, 116, 126, 131 on shaft 90. The cams produce a positive movement in both directions and a frangible plate 111 fractures upon excessive load. The two members 75, 100 first close together to grip the stock and then move upwardly to cut-off a workpiece W which is gripped by transfer fingers 105 on member 100 and transferred to die 27. The shank of the workpiece is there extruded and finally the workpiece is transferred to the heading die 28. Both dies have ejector rods such as 31, Fig. 2, actuated through adjustable linkage 33, 35, 36, 38 by one or preferably two cam surfaces 47 on a common rocking member 48 driven by a connecting rod 50 from an auxiliary crank-shaft 53 geared to the main crank-shaft 11. Linkage 36 includes a frangible plate 39. Specifications 964,523 and 964,524 are referred to.
