Abstract

955,339. Transferring blanks. JOSEPH RHODES & SONS Ltd. Aug. 18, 1961 [Aug. 22, 1960], No. 28956/60. Heading B3H. Workpieces are fed between tools 2 on a multi-stage press by sets of grippers 8 on an annular carrier 9. Each pair of gripping jaws 8 are mounted on pins 10 of rocking levers 11, carrying on their fulcrum pins 12 intermeshing gears 13, 14. Gear 14 also meshes with a common gear ring 15 mounting a bracket 16 linked at 17 to a reciprocating slide 18 driven preferably from the press crank-shaft. A brake pad 21 exerts a restraining pressure on the carrier 9 such that when the slide 18 is reciprocated the gear ring 15 first moves the jaws 18 from an outer closed position to an inner closed position gripping a workpiece and continued movement of the ring with the gears then locked causes the carrier 9 to overcome the resistance of the brake pad and move the workpiece to the next tool. Opposite movement of the slide 18 first opens and retracts the jaws and then returns the carrier 9 to its original position. The press has a set of upper female dies and lower mandrels 7, 4 respectively, Fig. 2 (not shown).
