Abstract

904,025. Forging; extruding. TEXTRON INDUSTRIES Inc. Nov. 12, 1958 [Dec. 18, 1957], No. 36449/58. Class 83 (4). In a heading or like machine having a die bed 11, Fig. 2, with a plurality of dies 45, 46 cooperating with reciprocating punches 15, 62 and a transfer mechanism with gripping fingers 90, 91, Fig. 4, for moving the workpiece between the dies, the transfer mechanism is mounted for movement from an operative position, Fig. 4, into an inoperative position, Fig. 10 (not shown), above the die bed and when in the latter position its driving means is still operative. Wire stock 48, Fig. 1, is fed through a cut-off die 47, Fig. 4, against a stop 49 and severed by cooperating cutters 50, 51 which transfer the workpiece opposite an extruding die 46. The cutters are actuated through linkage such as 53, 54, 57 by cams on a side shaft 42 driven through bevel gearing from a half-speed shaft 74 coupled by reduction gears 75, 76 to the main crankshaft 21. The workpiece is pushed into die 46, Fig. 2, wherein its shank is partly extruded, Fig. 9 (not shown), by a punch 62 driven positively in both directions through adjustable linkage 64, 66, 68, 70, 85 by cams 73, 87 on the shaft 74; a breaker plate 83 and adjustment screws 81, 78, 84 are included. An ejector 163 actuated positively in both directions through adjustable linkage 164, 166, 167, Fig. 5, from a cam 172 on shaft 145, removes the workpiece from die 46. This ejection is assisted by the gripping fingers 90, 91, which have engaged the workpieces and are first moved axially away from the die face, Fig. 9 (not shown), by means of linkage 135, 138, 140, 142 driven from a cam 144 on shaft 145; a spring-biased plunger 148 is included with this linkage. Gripping fingers 90, 91 then transfer the workpiece opposite heading die 45, Fig. 4, the transfer movement being produced by adjustable linkage 94, 103, 101, 107, 116, 112 driven by cams 118, 115, on shaft 42; the followers are biased against their cams by spring plungers 120. Adjustable stops 109, 110, 126 and a spring-loaded lostmotion coupling 133 are provided. The transfer mechanism may be tilted upwardly about the axis of pin 155, Fig. 5, into an operative position where the gripping jaws can be adjusted against a template 185, Fig. 10 (not shown). The mechanism is clamped by screws 160 in its operative position. The fingers move inwardly to insert the workpiece into die 45, in which it is headed in two stages by punches 15, 16, Fig. 1, mounted on a transversely slidable head 24 of the main gate 14 which is actuated through connecting rods 18, 19 from the crankshaft 21. The head 24 is moved transversely through adjustable linkage 33, 35 by a pair of cams 40, 41 on shaft 42; relatively slidable members 29, 30, Fig. 2, allow for reciprocation of the gate. From die 45 the headed workpiece is finally ejected by a rod 175 actuated through linkage 176, Fig. 1, 178, 181 by cam 182 on shaft 74. Specifications 904,026 and 904,027 are referred to.
