Abstract
482,295. Making screw threads. GOX, L. N. (Trurnit, F.) Sept. 26, 1936, No. 26173. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Forging.-In the manufacture of wood screws and other screws in which the thread is not carried throughout, the blank, particularly screws with a point are forged between dies commencing at one end and progressively forging, the excess metal being displaced axially in the blank so that the shank remains of the same diameter as the screwed portion. The blank is formed first with a point x as shown in Fig. 1, the shears being arranged to obtain the shape indicated in the drawing, which forms a basis for the commencement of the forging. Radially movable dies a, b, c, d, Fig. 3, are provided with the necessary shape for the thread and the die a after the operation of forming the first convolution, is checked from moving radially and serves as a guide for the blank to screw into. The blank is guided by a member f, Fig. 4, and is pressed longitudinally by spring action.
