Abstract

732,053. Forging nuts. FIELD, C. L. Aug. 10, 1953 [May 8, 1952], No. 11609/52. Class 83 (4). A method of shaping the exterior of nut blanks comprises axially pressing a metal slug in a die, which slug 5, Fig. 1, has concave side faces 6 to facilitate flow of metal in the die. The slug is cut from a length of stock drawn to the correct cross-section. For making a weld nut the slug is pressed between dies 7, 8, Fig. 2, of which the upper die 7 forms the hexagonal head of the nut and the lower die 8 the spigot 10 and projections 11. The flange 13 of the nut is upset between the dies. Hexagon nuts with chamfered ends may also be forged between dies.
