Abstract

115,744. Griffiths, F. H. July 28, 1917. Forging bolts; dies.-Consists in a process for making bolt heads by upsetting rod-blanks in special dies. The lower die c is provided with a liner d suited to the size of bolt, and in the lower end of this liner is an ejector e on which the blank rests and by which the end is shaped. In a recess in the die c is a die-plate f having a central opening corresponding to the shape and size of head to be made. The heated blank is placed in the lower die, and its upper end is upset by a punch g, provided with a recess g<2> to shape the upper face of the head. The surplus metal flows outwards as shown in Fig. 2, and forms a fin h, When this heading operation is finished, the bolt and die plate f are ejected and placed between tools by which the head is driven down through the plate f to remove the fin and finish the heading operation. By slightly tapering the recess in the plate, a high finish is given to the head.
