Abstract

720,113. Forging. WIGGIN & CO., Ltd., H. Feb. 10, 1953 [Feb. 13, 1952], No. 3872/52. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Making turbine blades.-A deep die press has a punch 6 and a die 2 which co-operate to enclose the workpiece 56 during the pressing operation, the recess in the die being defined by a stationary central piece 10 and two end pieces 12, 14 which can rock with respect to the central piece from a position they occupy during the pressing operation to a position in which they cause the workpiece to break contact with the central piece and partly with both end pieces. The latter have bevelled faces 34 which mate with the bevelled faces 36 of the stationary central piece 10. These end pieces are each mounted in a die holder 28 pivoted on a spindle 30 and are lifted during the upstroke of the punch by rods 46 having nuts and washers 50, 52, which are engaged by a crosshead 44 of the press ram 8. During the pressing operation the holders 28 each rest on strip 40 secured to the bolster 4. The press is used for forging a turbine blade from a dumb-bell-shaped blank of nickel/chromium-based alloy which blank is formed by hot rolling a billet in an apparatus of the kind described in Specification 668,882. The rolled blank may be roughly machined before forging, to bring it to the definite volume required., and it is so shaped that no part thereof initially touches the joints between the die pieces and therefore no flashes are produced. After forging the blade may require final machining although this may be unnecessary with accurately forged blades. Single-rooted blades may also be forged from mushroom-shaped blanks.
