Abstract
692,042. Making knife blades. MILLER, B. M. June 28, 1951 [Aug. 17, 1950], No. 20473/50. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). In a process for making knife blades with solid forged bolsters, hardened stock of a section substantially that of the finished blade, is cut to length with an allowance for the tang and the bolster, and the bolster is upset electrically and shaped by dies during or after the said upsetting, the stock being cut or punched out to the outline of the blade before or after said upsetting. A blank 12 formed from a hardened and tempered bright stainless steel strip 11 is upset in an electrical upsetting apparatus, Fig. 8, to form a bolster portion 14 and a tang portion 13, Fig. 3, the portion 14 being die-formed to the finished shape 16, Fig. 4, during or after the upsetting operation. The portion 13 is then pressed edgewise between dies with roughened or serrated surfaces, to form a tang with a roughened surface hollowed as at 18, Fig. 6. The back of the blade is bevelled by grinding and the blade glazed, polished and sharpened. The upsetting apparatus, Fig. 8, comprises bronze vice electrodes 25, 26, 31, 32, carried on slides 23, 24. The blade portion of the blank is firmly gripped between the jaws 25, 26 and the tang portion 13 is slidably gripped by the jaws 31, 32. After heating a ram 41 hydraulically operated or spring-pressed, moves the slide 23 to cause the metal to upset, an hydraulic ram 40 causing the slide 24 to move to the left to expose fresh metal until the upset is complete, the tang end being backed up by a rod 46 carried in a wedge-holder 44, 45. In a modification, the blank, Fig. 9, is upset in apparatus, Fig. 13 (not shown), comprising a stationary vice electrode slidably supporting the blade portion which is pushed through the jaws during upsetting, and a movable vice electrode which grips the tang portion and moves therewith under the action of an hydraulic ram, to upset. The electrodes are water-cooled and may be fitted with renewable copper liners. The blade is finally shaped and finished as before.
