Abstract
815,136. Making electric contacts; forging. ENGELHARD INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 17, 1957, No. 37338/56. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). Electric contacts, Fig. 4, are made by cutting substantially square blanks 4, Fig. 2, from rectangular section strip 1, Fig. 1 (not shown), consisting of a malleable backing metal 2 such as copper, and a malleable contact metal 3 such as silver, the blanks being then forged to shape in a die or dies 6. The strip may be sheared from a sheet of copper faced with silver and the blanks are fed automatically into the die 6 of a cold-heading machine and are upset to rivet shape between moving and stationary punches 7, 8. Alternatively the blanks may be upset hot. Other shapes of contacts are described, Figs. 5-7 (not shown), and they may have hollow shanks. A layer of silver may be applied to the whole contact by electrodeposition for reducing corrosion.
