759,407. Making electrical contact rivets. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO., Ltd. March 23, 1955 [April 7, 1954], No. 10212/54. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). In the manufacture of a rivet-type electrical contact by the impact extrusion of a metal blank 6, a layer of lubricating metal 7 is provided between the surface of the blank being extruded and the surface or surfaces of the extrusion opening in the extrusion punch or die. The blank 6 which may be of copper, is provided with a layer 7 of silver, which layer may be bonded to the blank or preferably may be applied by electro-deposition to a thickness of between 0.0001 inch and 0.003 inch. The coated blank is inserted in the opening 2 of a die 1 and is supported therein by an ejector 4. The blank is then impact extruded to form a shank 8 by a hollow punch 3. The invention may be used for making electrical contacts with hollow shanks by the method of Specification 756,393. The blanks may be bimetallic consisting of a precious metal facing on a base metal backing. Instead of the lubricating metal being provided on the blank, it may be provided in the extrusion opening of the punch. Specification 642,648 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
