Abstract

717,652. Switch contacts. MAKEPEACE CO., D. E. Nov. 24, 1952. No. 29656/52. Class 38(5) [Also in Group XXII] A method of making an electric contact comprises bonding a plug in a bore of a base metal strip, said plug being formed from a laminated stock having a precious metal top layer and a bottom layer of solder and forming a small projection in the bonded assembly of the plug in the strip so that the outer surface of said projection constitutes said precious metal. A metal strip 10 of copper, nickel, brass, bronze or nickel-silver is punched with a series of holes 11 for receiving a precious metal contact point the location and number depending upon the shape and construction of the electrical contact element. A series of centering holes 12 are also punched in the strip parallel to an edge the holes being spaced apart by a distance equal in length to the length of strip needed to form one contact element. A flat laminated metal plug 13 is punched out from a laminated metal strip comprising a base layer b of similar metal to that of the strip 10, a top layer c of precious metal e.g. gold, silver, platinum, palladium or their alloys and a bottom layer a of solder. The layer c may be electroplated on the layer b or they may be welded together by pressure welding, brazing or soldering. Alternatively the strip may consist entirely of precious metal with a film a of solder on one side. The plug is placed in the bore 11 and the assembly is then heated in a furnace to bond the plug in position. The finished contacts 25, Fig. 5, are formed from the assembled strip by stamping, drawing and cutting operations.
