Abstract

1,207,970. Making composite sheet; jointing by rolling; welding by pressure. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 11 Dec., 1967 [20 Dec., 1966], No. 56889/66. Headings B3A, B3M and B3R. A copper or copper alloy substrate is coated or inlaid with a noble metal or alloy by locating an intermediate layer of nickel, iron, cobalt, molybdenum, or vanadium between the substrate and coating, and heating the assembly under pressure to bond the layers together. The noble metal may be gold, silver, platinum or palladium, and the layers may be bonded by hot pressing or rolling. Alternatively, the intermediate layer may be hot bonded to the noble metal or alloy, and the Cu or Cu alloy substrate then bonded to the bi-metallic product. The substrate can alternatively be electroplated with the intermediate layer, the bimetallic product then being bonded to the noble metal or alloy. In an example, Pd and Ni strips of 0À011 inch and 0À0275 inch thickness, respectively, were pressed together at 4000 p.s.i. and 900‹ C. in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. The Ni surface was then cleaned and pressed into contact with a 1 inch thick phosphor-bronze strip containing 4% tin at 3500 p.s.i. and 770‹ C. in a non- oxidizing atmosphere. The resulting composite strip was reduced to 0À0020 inch in four rolling steps with intermediate anneals.
