Abstract

1432906 Making clad wire; drawing; rolling MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 21 Oct 1974 [19 Oct 1973 (2) 10 May 1974] 45510/74 Headings B3A B3M and B3P [Also in Division E1] A method of making a clad wire electric conductor comprises providing a strip including at least a base metal and at least a surface layer of noble metal bonded to the base metal, forming the strip into a transversely arcuate form with the noble metal on the convex surface and drawing the formed strip through a die to form a wire which is partially clad with the noble metal. The strip is first annealed in a non- oxidizing atmosphere at a temperature above the recrystallization temperature or temperatures of the component materials. It is then cold-drawn or rolled to arcuate form preferably in two or three stages and progressively colddrawn to the required cross-section, which may be circular, semi-circular, triangular, square, trapezoidal or other shapes, in a number of drawing stages. The base metal can be copper or nickel or their alloys and the noble metal can be silver, gold, palladuim or platinum or their alloys. An intermediate layer of nickel or silver or their alloys may be included. Preferably the ratio of thickness to width of the initial strip lies between 1 : 3 to 1 : 5
