Abstract
In a composite bearing consisting of a steel backing layer, a surface layer of tin containing alloy and an intermediate layer of high heat conductivity metal, a relatively thin barrier layer of a metal resistant to tin diffusion separates the intermediate and surface layers, the layers being uniformly bonded to each other all over their engaging surfaces. The barrier layer, 0.00005 to 0.0001 inches in thickness, may comprise nickel, cobalt or iron; the surface layer, less than 0.005 inches in thickness comprises approximately 85 per cent lead, 12 per cent tin and 3 per cent copper; and the intermediate layer may comprise silver or copper, or a copper lead alloy such as 75 per cent copper, 24 per cent lead and 0.5 per cent tin. The addition of a silver strike to the intermediate layer improves its bond with the barrier layer, and the latter and surface layer may be electrodeposited.
