Abstract
711,438. Plain bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 3, 1952 [Nov. 23, 1951], No. 27533/51. Class 12(1) A plain bearing comprises a metal backing, a cushioning layer of lead, a bearing facing of a soft tin containing alloy, e.g. a tin or lead base alloy, and between the cushioning layer and the facing, a thin barrier layer of a metal such as nickel, cobalt or iron which is resistant to tin diffusion. In one embodiment the backing 1 is of steel 0.035 inch to 0.250 inch in thickness on to which a 70: 30 copper-lead layer 2 of 0.010 inch to 0.080 inch thickness is sintered. The liner is then lead plated in the bore, layer 3, to 0.0005 inch to 0.004 inch thickness, the lead coating being burnished to eliminate porosity, then cleaned, and nickel plated 4 to a thickness of 0.00005 inch to 0.00015 inch to form the tin barrier. A tin-lead alloy containing 10 per cent tin is then deposited to a thickness of 0.0005 inch to 0.005 inch and bored to give a final bearing surface. In a further embodiment the bearing comprises a backing of copper alloy, e.g. 80:20 copper zinc, a thin cushion layer of lead .of 0.0005 inch to 0.004 inch thickness electrodeposited thereon, followed by a thin layer of nickel and a bearing facing of tin-lead as before described. The bearings of this embodiment are suitable for use in aluminium housings as their co-efficient of thermal expansion is nearer to that of aluminium than a steel backed bearing. Various moduli of elasticity are given for the layer materials so that a bearing may be made which can yield elastically to accommodate slight' transient misalignments.
