692,190. Making bearings. GLACIER METAL CO., and BROWN, W. B. D. Sept. 1, 1950 [Nov. 1, 1949], No. 27964/49. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). [Also in Group XXXIV] A method for the manufacture of plain bearings comprises bonding strips of an aluminium bearing alloy and of copper or copper alloy by rolling together under pressure, the copper or copper alloy layer being initially soft and being hardened during the rolling operation or subsequently by heat treatment. The copper alloy backing may contain tin, zinc, nickel or iron to increase its sensitivity to work-hardening, or it may contain an element such as titanium or a combination such as nickel-tin-zinc to render the backing layer susceptible to hardening by heat treatment. The aluminium alloy may contain tin and/or lead. A coating of soft metal or alloy may be deposited to form the bearing surface.
