Abstract
1275431 Casting composite articles; making bearings VANDER VELL PRODUCTS Ltd 24 March 1970 [26 March 1969] 15930/69 Headings B3A and B3F [Also in Divisions C7 and F2] A metal laminate suitable for use in the manufacture of plain bearings has a metal backing layer, an intermediate layer which bonds to the metal backing and to a bearing layer of an aluminium alloy which contains 6 to 20% by wt. oflead and 6 to 20% tin but containing more lead than tin. The bearing layer may also contain up to 6% silicon, and 2% copper. The backing layer is preferably steel and the bonding layer an aluminium alloy containing up to 6% silicon. The laminate is formed by coating a steel strip with a layer of silicon-aluminium alloy, and applying a layer of aluminium-lead-tin alloy. The bearing layer is applied by preheating the coated steel strip to 500-600‹ C. in an atmo. sphere of argon. The alloy containing 80% by wt. Al, 10% Sn and 10% Pb is heated to 700‹ to 1200‹ C. and cast on to the coated steel strip on the coated side. The laminate is quenched and machined to the required size.
