Abstract

1,259,180. Casting composite articles. VANDERVELL PRODUCTS Ltd. 18 Dec., 1970 [18 Dec., 1969], No. 61766/69. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A metal laminate suitable for plain bearings is made by casting an aluminium tin alloy containing 6 to 30% tin on to a backing layer and quenching the molten alloy at a cooling rate of at least 500‹ C. per second. This is achieved by directing a stream of aqueous glycerol solution over the side of the backing layer opposite to that which has been coated with the alloy. The backing layer may be made of steel and may be preheated in an inert or reducing atmosphere e.g. argon or partially burnt propane. An aluminium silicon alloy may be applied to the steel strip before casting the aluminium tin alloy.
