Abstract

1,216,766. Casting composite articles. KUBOTA IRON & MACHINERY WORKS, Ltd. 18 April, 1968 [1 July, 1967], No. 18338/68. Heading B3F. [Also in Division C7] A centrifugal casting process for composite bodies particularly rollers for rolling mills includes, supplying a molten mass of metal to a metallic mould, rotating the mould about a horizontal axis to cause the molten metal to contact the mould surface and solidify, adding a flux to coat the inner surface of the cast metal uniformly, maintaining the flux coating at 800‹ C. to 1300‹ C., erecting the mould vertically and adding a second mass of molten metal. The flux is of such a viscosity that if the mould is stopped rotating, or when the mould is erected vertically, a uniform thickness coating is maintained. When casting rollers, the first metal was cast iron and the second metal a different heavy duty cast iron. The flux may be introduced as a mixture with the first metal (in which case centrifungal force will separate the mixture forming a slag coating), or as a separate mass while the first metal is cast, or after casting of the first metal by sprinkling it on the metal's furface. The flux contains 50% wt. to 90% wt. of a mixture of silica and borax and 10% wt. to 50% wt. soda ash, NaCl, NaF, limestone, CaCl 2 or CaF 2 .
