Abstract

1470801 Making rollers; casting composite articles; rolling mills HITACHI METALS Ltd 7 May 1974 [11 May 1973] 20073/74 Headings B3A B3F and B3M [Also in Division C7] A composite sleeve having an outer diameter greater than 100 cm. and comprising an outer layer of high-alloyed steel having a Shore hardness of 60-75 and a carbon content of 0À4- 0À9% and an inner layer of low-alloyed steel having a Shore hardness of 30-45, is produced by centrifugal casting. The metal forming the inner layer is poured into the mould before complete solidification of the metal forming the outer layer. After removal from the mould the sleeve is subjected to a homogenizing and spherodizing treatment and is hardened in a quenching and tempering furnace prior to being mounted by shrinkage fitting on a shaft to form a back-up roll for a rolling mill. The ratio of the thickness of the sleeve to its outer diameter is 0À1 : 1 to 0À3 : 1 and ratio of the thickness of the outer layer to that of the inner layer is 0À4 : 1 to 1À2 : 1.
