1,038,308. Making seamless tubes; centrifugal-casing machines; rolling tubes. COMBUSTION ENGINEERING Inc. Dec. 9, 1964 [Dec. 19, 1963], No. 50174/64. Headings B3A, B3F and B3M. A method of making a seamless tube includes the steps of (a) centrifugally casting a tube having a greater diameter and wall thickness than the finished tube and allowing the tube to cool, (b) smoothing the walls of the tube by turning or grinding, (c) heat treating the tube to remove any stresses set up in the machining operation, (d) cold-working the tube over a mandrel by rockers or rollers to reduce the wall thickness of the tube and so lengthen the tube and (e) hot working the tube in a rolling mill in which the rollers stretch the tube and reduce the diameter of the tube to produce the finished tube. In the centrifugal casting step, Fig. 1 (not shown), molten metal from an induction furnace is poured by a ladle at a controlled rate into a metal mould lined with porous ceramic material. The casting apparatus may be surrounded by an inert atmosphere such as argon, or a reducing atmosphere such as hydrogen. The hot-rolling step (e) is performed by a rolling mill, Fig. 8 (not shown), having sets of three rollers of gradually reducing diameter, each driven at a different speed so as to tension and stretch the tube.
