Abstract

793,356. Continuous - casting machines. STEWARTS & LLOYDS, Ltd. Sept. 27, 1954 [Sept. 30, 1953], No. 26804/53. Class 83 (1). Molten-metal is fed to a continuous-casting mould by the combined actions of gas under static-pressure and gas under pulsating-pressure. A ladle 1, Fig. 1, is placed within a gas-tight chamber 10 and air or other gas, such as nitrogen or other inert gas under pressure, is applied to the surface 6 of the melt through pipes 1C, 17, the pipe 16 supplying air at a static-pressure and the pipe 17 supplying air at a pulsating-pressure to prevent metal sticking in the mould 12. At its lower end the mould carries a ladle-stopper 9, and a heated refractory entry-runner 14 which co-operates with seating 15 to form a gas-tight seal. A low-frequency induction element in the exitrunner 21 stirs the molten core of the casting, which is extracted by rollers 23 and cut into billets 2B by torches 27, the billets being removed by a manipulating device 28. The speed of the rolls, and the gas-pressure, may be simultaneously controlled as by electronic means 24. The mould-assembly is supported on jacks 26, being lowered into engagement with the ladle and chamber before casting commences, and being removed therefrom when the level 6 reaches the lower edge of the ladlepartition 3. In a modification, a tubular extension of the mould dips into the melt in the ladle, and the mould-assembly is lowered during casting to maintain the extension below the surface of the melt. In a further modification, the ladle itself is pressurized, the gaspipes passing through a gas-tight cover-plate. In another embodiment, a bottom-pour ladle is enclosed in a pressure-container alongside the mould and the metal is fed from the bottom of the ladle through a U-shaped runner-block. In a further modification, a bottom-pour ladle is pressurized and feeds a horizontal mould. It is stated that for upward-casting, a gaspressure of 4-6 1bs. /in.<SP>2</SP> per foot-length of cast-bar is used, and 6, 10 and 20-inch square steel bars can be cast at speeds of 4-5, 2, and 1 foot per minute respectively.
