1312590 Casting composite articles; making composite metal sheet VEREINIGTE OSTERREICHISCHE EISENUND STAHLWERKE AG 20 Sept 1971 [22 Sept 1970] 43798/71 Headings B3A and B3F A method of producing a three-layer rolled metal product, e.g. sheet, comprises continuously casting metal in a mould, drawing an endless bar having a liquid core downwardly from the mould, guiding the bar along a curved path which extends downwardly and then upwardly beyond the height to which the liquid core may rise to produce a hollow bar, severing the hollow bar into sections, casting a metal into the hollow centre of a section to form a composite metal ingot, and rolling the ingot to form the three-layer product. Steel of different compositions is used for the inner and outer layers of the product, the thickness of the outer layers being determined by the casting speed and cooling rate in the continuous casting part of the process. After the hollow bar has been cut into sections, the sections are set on a floor plate and are supported by water-cooled supporting means to prevent them from bulging under the ferrostatic pressure when they are filled. The mean temperature of the sections before pouring is preferably above 700‹ C., the inner temperature being within the range 900‹ to 1200‹ C. The composite ingots are abraded so as to remove a layer 5 to 10 mm. thick, heated, and rolled in two stages to produce strip, the strip being cut into plates which are annealed at 950‹ C., cut, straightened and pickled. Alternatively the strip may be reeled, pickled, abraded and cold rolled before being annealed.
