Abstract

Method of casting rolling-mill rolls is by electroslag remelting. Mould is in three sections corresponding to the central barrel and outer journals. Pre-cast electrode bar fits into hole in top section, and melting takes place progressively at rate equivalent to that of solidification. Separate electrode bar may be lowered into position when either first bar is melted through, or if change of composition is desired, e.g. for journals. Method is esp. applicable to white cast iron or hypereutectoid steel with high Cr content. Cast roll is free from internal cracking and surface is easily machinable.
