Abstract

In the continuous casting of steel, a low melting point flux is applied to the top surface of the molten steel in the mold, to provide adequate assimilation of scum and thus minimize breakouts. In using such low melting point fluxes, it has been found that pinhole defects can be substantially eliminated by feeding an amount significantly lower than is conventionally employed. The maximum amount which may be employed is dependent on the dimensions of the caster and is given by the equation: F max. = 0.017 (C.S.A.
