Abstract

1,087,026. Continuous casting-machines. S. ARENA. March 15, 1966 [March 19, 1965], No. 11355/66. Heading B3F. A process for continuously casting metal and metal alloys comprises withdrawing metal from a body of molten metal through a continuous casting mould 4, cooling the withdrawn metal within the mould 4 to effect solidification thereof as it is being withdrawn, reversing the direction of movement of the cooled casting 5 so as to reintroduce it at least partially into the mould 4 and then withdrawing the solidified casting 5 further by movement in the original direction. The process can be applied to the " consumable electrode " continuous casting process in which a thermal discontinuity is produced by circular displacement within the mould. Relative movement between the casting 5 and mould 4 may be achieved by movement of the mould 4.
