Abstract

1304705 Continuous casting MANNESMANN AG 20 March 1970 [21 March 1969] 13461/70 Heading B3F Two slag-forming powders are tipped on to the surface of the melt, e.g. steel, in a continuous casting mould, the first powder to be tipped being one which melts quicker than the other. The first powder may include exothermic ingredients such as Al, Si, alkalimetal or oxygenyielding agents such as FeO and melt at 800‹C. The second, higher melting point powder (1150‹ C.) is added when at least half the first powder has flowed as slag between the metal shell and the mould wall. While the first powder is melting, some more of the powder mixed with some of the second powder may be added before the addition of the second powder. Shortly before casting is finished, a combustible powder and/or one which retains its powder form, e.g. sawdust, may be substituted as an addition to the melt surface in the mould to avoid leaving a slag layer on the end of the strand.
