Abstract

917,786. Continuous casting processes. LOW MOOR ALLOY STEELWORKS Ltd. Nov. 9, 1961 [Nov. 10, 1960], No. 38680/60. Class 83 (1). In a continuous casting process molten metal in the ladle is covered by a slag layer, and a protective layer of molten, neutral or slightly reducing artificial slag is maintained on the metal in the tundish and in the mould. The artificial slag may be glass or powdered steelmaking slag, or a mixture of both, with or without additions such as fluorspar and calcium fluoride and exothermic materials, and may be applied in powder or liquid form. The metal may enter the mould below the surface of the melt so as not to disturb the protective layer.
