Abstract
1,164,289. Casting composite metal articles. WELLWORTHY Ltd. 21 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965], No. 54710/65. Heading B3F. A method of making a composite metal article comprises coating a ferrous metal component or a sintered ferrous or non-ferrous component with a spray deposit of molybdenum, coating the molybdenum with a layer of tin, and then casting a non-ferrous metal against the coated metal component. The molybdenum coating may be applied on east iron or steel components by a flame gun and may have a thickness of 0À001-0À005 inch. The tin layer, which may be up to 0.001 inch thick may be applied by electroplating, chemical deposition, impact plating or by hot dipping. After the tin layer has been applied, the coated component may be pre-heated and placed in a mould, and the non- ferrous metal, e.g. aluminium, magnesium or an alloy thereof cast in. Pre-heating may be effected by dipping the component in the molten non-ferrous metal. The method of the invention may be used in making pistons, labyrinth seals, brake drums and hollow ware.
