Abstract

1,161,663. Casting composite articles. WELLWORTHY Ltd. 12 Jan., 1967 [18 Jan., 1966], No. 2369/66. Heading B3F. A layer of tin is applied to a sintered ferrous metal component (e.g. by impact plating, hot dipping or electrical or chemical deposition) before metal is cast on to it. A spray deposit of molybdenum may be applied before the tin. The casting may be an Al, Mg or alloy (e.g. Si-A1 or Cu-A1 alloy) piston and the sintered insert may be a piston ring groove, cooling coil, combustion chamber or a reinforcing or an expansion insert. Bi-metal labyrinth seals, brake drums or hollow ware may be so made. The sintered metal is steel, iron (e.g. austenitic cast iron) or ferrous alloy. After tinning, the sintered insert may be preheated by dipping in molten metal, e.g. the casting metal, and it may be preheated in the casting mould.
