Abstract
599,684. Casting cased cylinders. JENNINGS, H. W. K. (Alfin Corporation) July 5, 1944, No. 12824. [Class 83 (i)] [Also in Group II] A ferrous metal article is coated with aluminium or aluminium base alloy by first immersing it in a bath of such metal at a temperature, not greatly over 1625‹ F., sufficient to cause a ferrous aluminium alloy film to form and then casting on the aluminium coating while said film is hot enough to be wetted by the cast metal.. A sleeve 17 with arms 18 is placed on the flange 12 of an aeroplane engine cylinder 10, e.g. made of chrome-molybdenum steel SAE4140, and the whole lowered into a bath 16 of aluminium thus ensuring that scum does not adhere to the part 110 to be coated which has been previously cleaned by brushing or sand blasting. Parts not to be coated may be lime washed. The molten aluminium may be at 1525 to 1625‹ F. and the article be immersed for a few seconds to over 10 minutes according to its size. It may be rapidly cooled to prevent excessive alloying by dipping in a bath of aluminium alloy containing 13 per cent of silicon and at a temperature of 1000 to 1250‹ F. The final casting may be cooled by an air blast or by quenching in oil to harden the aluminium.
