Abstract

Grey cast iron wet cylinder liners are coated on the outside surface with aluminium or aluminium alloy, to reduce the effect of cavitation erosion, by dipping the liner into molten aluminium or aluminium alloy at a temperature above the critical range for the iron (860-880 DEG C.) to allow the aluminium to alloy with the surface of the iron, followed immediately by quenching the liner below the critical range of the iron to favour formation of sorbitic iron and suppress the ferritic structure. Quenching is achieved by plunging the coated liner into a bath of aluminium or aluminium alloy at a temperature in the range 570-680 DEG C. In the case of grey iron compositions containing alloy constituents such as Cr and/or Mo it may be necessary to raise the first bath temperature by about 15 DEG C., the second bath temperature remaining constant.
