Abstract

Grey cast iron containing 2.25-3.25 per cent C, 7-10 per cent Ni, 3-4 per cent Cu (Ni plus Cu not exceeding 14 per cent), 1-4 per cent Cr, 1.5-3 per cent Si, up to 1 per cent Mn, the balance being iron and unavoidable impurities, is hardened by treating to a temperature of 1000-1050 DEG F. The "as cast" metal may be softened for machining by heating to 1600-1800 DEG F. and cooling rapidly to below 900 DEG F. The castings may be held at the hardening temperature for 8 to 15 hours.
