Abstract

In a method of manufacturing nodular cast iron there is added to molten pig or cast iron sulphur or selenium as elements or as compounds which liberate the element. The amount added may be between 0.01 and 5 per cent of the weight of iron. Deoxidizing agents, e.g. ferromanganese, ferro boron, ferro silicon, magnesium, aluminium, calcium, strontium, beryllium or their compounds may also be added. The additions may be made as the metal leaves the furnace or to the ladle. The castings produced may be annealed at 730-780 DEG C or normalized at 900 DEG C or hardened by quenching from 850 DEG C and tempered at 425-450 DEG C and coding at 30-50 DEG C per hour. The Provisional Specification also includes the use of tellurium and antimony as neucleating agents.
